The parking lot of the Ontario Provincial Police detachment in Quinte West was shut down Tuesday after a resident brought an unexploded military ordnance device to the station.

OPP said vehicles were restricted from using the lot for about three hours after a man dropped off the ordnance at about 5:30 p.m.

The OPP Explosive Disposal Unit and 8 Wing Trenton’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal team attended the detachment and determined that there was no risk to the public after examining the item.

The ordnance was taken by the 8 Wing Trenton EOD for destruction.

Police are advising that anyone who finds unexploded ordnance should never touch it or attempt to move it. Instead, they should inform police that a possible ammunition item has been found and police will take steps to dispose of it.

If you don’t disturb the ordnance, there is no chance of it being detonated and hurting anyone, police said.
