The popular street festival Westfest has found a new location. Next year’s event will take place in Laroche Park in Mechanicsville from June 10 to 12.
Elaina Martin, founder and producer of the festival, made the announcement in a media release Thursday afternoon.
The move was necessitated when the Westboro Business Improvement Association decided to cut funding to the festival in August.
“As we move our plans forward with our new host venue, we are excited by what has become a real opportunity for growth and development,” Martin says.
“We dream of a space where families can bring blankets, lawn chairs, children and dogs in tow to celebrate with us, all the while enjoying the plethora of Canadian art that we showcase during Westfest.”
Martin says she believes the festival leaves its former location “far better than when we moved in.”
“We are going back to our roots, to the heart of our mandate which is to make art accessible and free and give voice to the narratives and dialogues that are otherwise not heard.”
“We have chosen to move to Laroche Park specifically because we recognize, in the area, a need for economic and cultural stimulation and want to bring free art and give a voice to a community and area that is often overlooked.”
