The new home on Bel-Air Street in east-end Gatineau looked just dandy until the owner was exploring and found a round metal object inside that didn’t look right.

It looked, in fact, like an anti-vehicle landmine.

In came the city police, and the object gave them an unsettling feeling too. They evacuated the home Tuesday night and, for good measure, another house nearby.

Then they called the army.

Gatineau can sleep easier tonight, as Canadian Forces explosives experts determined the object is in fact a smoke detector. The police report stops there, so there’s no indication of what brand it is, or why it made anyone think of a mine in the first place.

It’s just over a month since a Texas teenager took a home-made clock to school and teachers thought it was a bomb.
