Ottawa will receive money from the province to build two new elementary schools in fast-growing areas of Kanata and South Ottawa. Education Minister Liz Sandals announced $41 million in funding Friday that also covers major renovations at three other schools.

The projects have long been on the wish lists at Ottawa’s public and Catholic school boards, and Sandals said they made a good business case for why they were needed. The five projects, to be completed over the next few years, are:

• A new public elementary school in South Ottawa’s Findlay Creek on Kelly Farm Drive, with space for 674 students from kindergarten to Grade 8. The building will have a licensed child-care centre with 30 spaces. The school is needed because the neighbourhood is growing and nearby Elizabeth Park School is slated to close.

• A new Catholic elementary school in the Marchwood Lakeside area of Kanata for 507 students from kindergarten to Grade 6. It will also include a licensed childcare, with 39 spaces. The school will be built in a suburb being developed by Urbandale.

• An addition that can house 436 students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School in Gloucester to replace the 20 portable classrooms now in use.

• An addition to West Carleton Secondary School in Dunrobin big enough to house 252 students.

• Renovations at Holy Family Catholic elementary school, which will be receiving students from Uplands School, which is slated to close.
