An elderly man who slipped and fell into the chilly Ottawa River was rescued Saturday by a passing cyclist who noticed him in the water.
Ottawa paramedics said the 83-year-old was feeding ducks when he fell into the river just after 11 a.m.
Marc Messier from Ottawa Fire Services said the man was drifting in the current and was about six metres from the shore when the male cyclist was able to reach him and pull him back to safety.
The man fell into the water along the pathway that runs parallel to the river near the George-Etienne Cartier Parkway and Shefford Road.
Ottawa firefighters assisted the men out of the water and up a nearly five-metre embankment using a ladder. Paramedics treated both men for hypothermia at scene.
The victim was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, paramedics said.
