Mellos, one of Ottawa oldest restaurants, won’t be allowed to remain at its long-established ByWard Market site because of “corporate greed,” says its operating manager.
Nina Vaccaro said Tuesday that landlord Domicile Developments plans to turn over the lease on the Dalhousie Street location Mellos has occupied for 73 years to a relatively new restaurant, Ace Mercado, next door.
CBC reported that Phil Faubert, the owner and operator of Ace Mercado, was offered the option of taking over the Mellos space when he opened his establishment 18 months ago. Flaubert reportedly made the decision to do so a couple of weeks ago.
The menu at Ace Mercado was developed by chef René Rodriguez, the winner of Top Chef Canada in 2014, according to CBC.
Vaccaro said Domicile offered Mellos a six-month lease extension in the summer when a previous five-year lease was up. The lease extension ends on Dec. 31.

Mellos Restaurant occupies just 500 square feet.
She said was stunned by Domicile’s decision not to renew the lease, particularly since there had been no hint it wouldn’t be.
“We were completely blindside,” she said. “I guess they just made an executive decision to kick us out. It’s hard to believe they would treat us this way, but they told us they don’t need to give us a reason.”
Vaccaro said she and her father-in-law, Martin Fremeth, who has owned Mellos for the past five years, will seek a court injunction that would allow them to stay open while they negotiate a new lease.
Mellos opened in 1942 — in the midst of the Second World War — at 290 Dalhousie St. For decades it was a popular place for the late-night market crowd, and, in the mornings, for those in need of a full breakfast.
Three years ago, the restaurant experimented with offering more a high-end dinner menu, which proved to be a success.
“We don’t want to close. We want to keep Mellos alive. We’re part of the community,” Vaccaro said. “This is just corporate greed.”
