Ottawa – The 2015 Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards were presented to three Ottawa business people today: Dr. Nishith Goel, Moe Abbas and Dr. Maria Rasouli.

The Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards are presented annually to celebrate and recognize local businesspeople who have immigrated to Canada, achieved success in their entrepreneurial endeavours and contributed their time and support to make a difference in their community.

“All of our winners embody an entrepreneurial spirit that not only nurtures the business community but also makes Ottawa a better place to live for everyone,” said Mayor Jim Watson. “Today’s recipients are living proof that Ottawa is one of the best places in the world to live, work and play.”


Dr. Nishith Goel – Cistel Technologies

A veteran technology executive and entrepreneur Dr. Goel is the co-founder of several companies, including Cistel Technology where he is also CEO. After earning degrees in India and at the University of Waterloo, Dr. Goel began his professional career at Bell Northern Research in Ottawa in 1984. Since coming to Ottawa he has served on the Board of Directors of Enablence (ENA:TSX-V) and the Community Foundation of Ottawa, the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation and the Indo-Canada Ottawa Business Chamber, where he was Chair from 2009 to 2010. He is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Queen’s Centre for Energy and Power Electronics Research.


Moe Abbas – Ottawa General Contractors and Bumpn Inc.

Moe’s family came to Ottawa when he was a boy. At age 19 he founded his first two companies and has since founded or co-founded more than a dozen more including Ottawa General Contractors which has generated more than 30 million dollars of economic benefit to the Ottawa economy. More than 100 trades, suppliers and employees are able to provide for their families from OGC. Moe's current start-up, Bumpn Inc, is the first consumer facing social media application to come from Ottawa. Bumpn is part of Invest Ottawa. Moe has not only initiated catalytic change in the community but is also an ideal role model for young immigrants.


Dr. Maria Rasouli – Escape Bicycle Tours

Dr. Rasouli is an immigrant from Iran with a PhD in Organizational Psychology from Carleton University. After working in her field for several years, she decided to pursue her passion for cycling and outdoors by founding Escape Bicycle Tours. Escape Bicycle Tours leverages on Ottawa’s world class cycling infrastructure and promotes an environmentally friendly and a physically healthy way of travelling. Just in its first season of operation, it has already been rated on TripAdvisor as one of the top activities in Ottawa. Dr. Rasouli has mentored over 150 professional newcomers to Ottawa in the last six years for their career development and establishment in Canada either as a volunteer or employee at several organizations serving the immigrant community


This year’s awards were presented at the TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs) Conference breakfast. TiE is an international association that has chapters in cities around the world, including Ottawa, which provide a network to help entrepreneurs connect, share leading practices and mentor new entrepreneurs.
