Libraries aren’t just for books anymore. Imagine Space, Ottawa’s first public maker space at the Ottawa Public Library’s Centrepointe branch in Nepean, has been so successful that it’s growing.
The 400-square-foot maker area opened in April 2014 with support from the U.S. embassy and the American Corners program. It includes 3D modelling, printing and scanning equipment as well as a laser cutter, photo, audio and video editing equipment and a green screen.
The laser cutter has been particularly popular and has a long waiting list., says a report from the library. But the cramped space has meant that some equipment couldn’t be set up permanently, other equipment is not visible to potential users and there hasn’t been enough room for visiting school groups. Now, Imagine Space is growing into the adjacent area. That will double its size, including a spot for a second laser cutter.
To make it happen, Imagine Space will be closed from Nov. 23 to early February. While reconfiguring is underway, most of the equipment — except for the laser cutter — will be relocated in the branch.
Construction costs are estimated at $85,000.
