The jobless rate in the national capital region held steady at 6.3 per cent in October, compared to September, Statistics Canada reported Friday.
The rate in Ottawa was 6.1 per cent for the month, compared with 6.2 per cent in September while in Gatineau, the jobless rate slipped to 6.6 per cent, versus 6.7 per cent a month earlier.
The number of jobs in the region was up by 2,800, but the areas labour force also grew by about the same number.
Public administration jobs were up by 1,700 in October over September, bringing public admin employment to 145,000. It was the third straight monthly rise.
The statistics showed a weakness in professional services employment in the capital as the job count slipped to 63,700 in October from 68,600 in September.
The education field added 4,000 jobs to a total of 63,700.
Nationally, Canada’s economy added 44,400 jobs in October, while the unemployment rate dipped to seven per cent.
In the U.S., the unemployment rate fell to a seven-year low of five per cent, as the economy added 271,000 jobs in the month.
