For the first time in decades, Ottawa residents won’t be able to call Operation Red Nose this holiday season.

The volunteer service was operated last year out of the Gatineau chapter for both sides of the river, but it was too much, said David Latouche, Operation Red Nose’s national spokesman.

“They decided to step up and cover the territory, but it was very, very complicated for them,” Latouche said. “They decided this year to concentrate their efforts on their own territory, which is the Gatineau area.”

Latouche said Operation Red Nose is looking for a youth or amateur sport-focused organization to sponsor the service in Ottawa for next year.

Kathy Gagnier, the president of the Mother’s Against Drunk Driving Ottawa chapter, said Operation Red Nose was beneficial to have in addition to taxis, the bus, or getting a ride.

“It’s unfortunate they aren’t out there because it’s a valuable service to help against impaired driving during the holiday season,” Ganier said, adding people should plan ahead now that they know the service won’t be available this year.

Operation Red Nose in Ottawa was operated by the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa from 2011 until last year when it couldn’t drum up corporate sponsorship for the nation’s capital and experienced insurance problems.

Ottawa was serviced before 2011 by Gatineau’s Opération Nez Rouge, which has been in operation for more than 30 years.

Last year, the operation serving both Ottawa and Gatineau raised $40,000 for youth and amateur sport with the help of 1,900 volunteers.

Those in need of a ride in Gatineau between Nov. 27 and Dec. 31 can call 819-771-2888.
