After more than a week fighting to get well in the care of the SPCA, Treize, the four-year-old boxer mix found emaciated and wandering near Shawville, has died.
“It is with a heavy heart that the Outaouais SPCA announces that Treize passed away tonight,” the group said in a Facebook post Monday evening. “The mobilization was instantaneous to try to save him. He received a lot of care, but especially a lot of love, even tons.”
Treize was found on Friday the 13th (he was given his name after the French word for 13), weighing just 16 kilograms, about half as much as he ought to. Staff said they were shocked he was able to even stand, and when lifted, he fell asleep in their arms.
There was no sign he had been abused and nobody knew where he’d come from.
With a long list of medical problems, from dehydration and weak bones to scrapes, cuts and anemia, staff expected it would take months for the dog to fully recover. Just last week, staff said Treize had started to recover, putting on weight and being able to stand for several minutes.
He was staying with the family of an SPCA staff member.
“He has really good morale, he’s happy, he is wagging his tail,” said Karine Dunigan of the SPCA said just days ago.
Treize died Monday evening, the SPCA said. An autopsy will be performed to find out the exact cause of death.
“Your passage among us has not been in vain, it has enabled hundreds of others to have the second chance you have not had,” the SPCA said. “Your story will remain etched in our memories and when we will meet your eyes on our pictures, we will remember that for which we fight every day. With all our love, we will say goodbye …. We will never forget you.”
