For the ninth consecutive year, lonely and isolated seniors in Ottawa will receive some holiday cheer thanks to the Be a Santa to a Senior program. Home Instead Senior Care Ottawa has partnered with Meals on Wheels and local Community Resource Centres to provide gifts and companionship for local seniors. Program officials hope to collect enough gifts to help more than 650 Ottawa-area seniors this holiday season.

“The winter holidays are an exciting time of year for most, but not everyone. Be a Santa to a Senior gives members of our community a chance to brighten the season for seniors who unfortunately could be spending the holidays alone, without any gifts or any way to celebrate,” says Lesley Sullivan, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Ottawa.

Participating retirement homes and retail locations will display Be a Santa to a Senior Christmas trees until Dec. 13th that feature ornaments with seniors’ first names and their gift requests. Holiday shoppers can pick ornaments from the trees, buy the items listed and return them unwrapped.

Trees will be displayed at the following locations:

The Empress, 170 McGibbon Dr., Kanata

  • The Edinburgh, 10 Vaughan St.
  • The Duke of Devonshire, 1095 Carling Ave.
  • Amica at Bearbrook, 2645 Innes Rd.
  • Bridlewood Trails, 480 Brigitta St., Stittsville
  • Riverpark Place, 1 Corkstown Rd.
  • Orléans Shoppers Home Health Care, 1675 Tenth Line Rd.
  • Westgate Shoppers Home Health Care, 1309 Carling Ave.
  • Kanata Shoppers Home Health Care, 420 Hazeldean Rd.

Program partners and volunteers will wrap donated gifts on Dec. 14th and distribute the gifts to local seniors who might otherwise spend the holidays alone.
