If there’s one thing Ottawa needs, it’s more politics.

Or so the Ontario government must believe as it adds a new provincial riding in Ottawa and redraws the boundaries of other electoral districts to correspond with the redistribution that took effect for the federal election in October.

The new riding, to be called Nepean to match its national counterpart, will be among 15 seats added across Ontario, mainly in the growing suburban belt around Toronto. Unlike the federal government, however, Ontario will not trim existing northern Ontario ridings to 10 from 11 to reflect population declines.

The changes leave Ottawa with eight seats and will be accompanied by new names for two ridings: Carleton and Kanata-Carleton.

In approving the riding changes, the province said it will also study a recommendation by the province’s chief electoral officer to “pre-register” 16- and 17-year-olds as voters in the hope of “engaging more young people in the voting process.” The voting age would remain 18.

As well, it said it will study tougher rules for election-related third-party advertising.

The government said it was maintaining the existing 11 northern ridings to ensure that northern communities continue to have effective representation in the legislature.
