The official countdown for New Year’s Eve has yet to begin but already the Scottish Society of Ottawa is in celebration mode as it prepares to host its 4th annual Hogmanay in and around Lansdowne’s Aberdeen Pavilion on December 31st.
Organizers, along with their corporate and community partners, received “100,000 welcomes” in Scottish Gaelic fashion from British High Commissioner Howard Drake and his wife, Gill, at a reception they threw Thursday night at their official residence, Earnscliffe.

The historic Victorian manor was built by a Scot and was home to our Scottish-born first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald (not to put a damper on things but it’s also where he passed away). Our ties to the UK’s most northern country are deeper than the Loch Ness; one in six Canadians is of full or partial Scottish descent.

Guests included Science Minister Kirsty Duncan, Ontario NDP MP Charlie Angus and former Conservative cabinet minister Jason Kenney. Making a special appearance was the group’s new mascot, Hamish the Haggis. He’s really cute and cuddly if you forget for a moment what haggis is: stuffed, boiled sheep stomach.

Hogmanay is a free, family-friendly and fireworks-packed party organized by the Scottish Society, which is also behind the annual Robbie Burns Dinner and the popular new Sir John A’s Great Canadian Kilt Skate. The Scottish-style New Year’s Eve party has been attracting crowds as big as 10,000.

Scottish Society board chair Kevin MacLeod, Canadian secretary to the queen and former Usher of the Black Rod, spoke about the group’s mission to “shine a light” on the role that the Scottish-Canadian community has played in the evolution of our country.

“I think the real power of what we’re doing, the real essence of what we’re doing with Hogmanay is sharing with other people our pride in our cultural background and encouraging them to do the same thing, because it’s a celebration of who we are individually, as a group and as a nation,” he told the room. “We’re shining a light on the rich tapestry that is Canadian society.”
