Gatineau police charged a man on Saturday for travelling in excess of 173 km/h in a 70 km/h zone.

Police spotted the man driving westbound on Boulevard des Allumettières near Rue Samuel-Edey at around 2 p.m. and stopped him a short while later near Rue de la Fabrique.

When the man was pulled over, police found signs that he may have been intoxicated, but he refused to submit to a breathalyzer test.

The 27-year-old driver, whom police would not identify, was charged with speeding and failing to stop at a red light. The automatic fines total $1,984 and come with 27 demerit points.

In addition, the man’s driver’s license was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Charges of driving while impaired and refusal to submit to a breathalyzer test are also expected to be submitted.
