Classes have been cancelled at all five school boards across Western Quebec Wednesday, as teachers and support staff walk the picket lines in support of a new contract with higher wages and better pensions for workers.
The Twitter account of the West Quebec School Board, the English-speaking school board, posted an update Tuesday morning saying “Reminder: tomorrow, Dec. 9 is a strike day, schools and daycares will be closed.”
The strike is affecting all schools in the West Quebec School Board, as well as the Cœur-des-Vallées, Des Draveurs, Des Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais, Portages-de-l’Outaouais as well as all four of the Cégep de l’Outaouais campuses in Gatineau.
Classes resume at the West Quebec and Hauts-Bois-de-l’Outaouais boards on Thursday, but strike action will continue Thursday and Friday at the other three boards.
Thousands of public sector workers in almost all provincial government are also on strike Wednesday.
Beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, unionized workers are set to march from the Robert-Guertin Centre to the Palais de Justice in Gatineau to press the government to return to negotiations for a new collective agreement.
