They say the holidays are all about tradition. In the case of the Mayor Jim Watson, it’s his custom to send his party guests off with free promotional knickknacks that he’s received and accumulated throughout the year.
On Wednesday, he hosted members of the community in his boardroom at City Hall for a two-hour holiday reception. Upon arrival, guests got to pick a number to see if they won a regifted gift (I got a reusable bag filled with a T-shirt, a squishy mini-soccer ball and a gadget-lover’s dream: a lovely salt and pepper set destined for a return to the regift circuit). Everyone got a red Christmas ornament promoting the 2017 Ottawa celebrations.
It’s still a year away but the logo for the upcoming 2017 Ottawa celebrations made an appearance at a holiday reception Mayor Jim Watson, seen with 1984 Olympic double-medalist Sue Holloway, hosted at the Mayor’s Boardroom at City Hall on Wednesday, December 16, 2015.
Guests included former pre-amalgamation city councillor and one-time acting mayor Allan Higdon and former Nepean mayor Mary Pitt, still fresh from their Christmas carol singing stint with the Old Grey Mayors at the Orchard View Living Centre in Manotick. Also seen were Liberal Ottawa South MPP John Fraser and former Olympians Greg Joy, a 1976 silver medalist high jumper, and Sue Holloway, who competed in both cross-country skiing and canoe sprint, winning in 1984 a bronze and silver in the latter sport.

As well, Paul Meeks of Kichesippi Beer was there with a frosty pint in hand. He supplied the party with his craft beer and returned Thursday to City Hall to watch the mayor present a 12-pack of Kichesippi to U.S. Ambassador Bruce Heyman. The mayor lost a soccer game bet with the diplomat after the New York Cosmos beat the Ottawa Fury in the NASL championship game.
