Changes to two eastern OC Transpo stations caused no traffic delays this morning, thanks to extended alternate service from Lees station and lower holiday traffic volumes.
The dedicated busway between Hurdman and Lees stations was closed Sunday as part of the conversion to light rail. The move comes almost six months after the eastern leg of the Transitway was shut down between Blair and Hurdman stations. Buses that formerly used the Transitway to travel to and from downtown from the east end now use dedicated lanes on the newly expanded Highway 417.
As of Monday, three trips on the 85 toward downtown will be extended so they start at Lees station at 4:34 a.m., 5:59 a.m. and 6:32 a.m. The first trip on the 16 leaves Lees for downtown, via Sandy Hill, at 6:16 a.m.
The last trips to downtown leave at 9:47 p.m. on the 85 and 10:58 p.m. on the 16, but, as of Jan. 4, two late-night trips on the 85 will be added at 10:32 p.m. and 11:32 p.m.
A number of bus routes including 85, 114, 176, 192 and 401, have been altered and no longer serve Hurdman station according to information circulated by OC Transpo. The popular 95 route will bypass Hurdman, but will stop at Lees for passengers travelling eastbound. There are a number of other changes that OC Transpo has highlighted on its website.
At Lees Station, the upper level will remain open for passengers to access buses. The lower level is closed while crews prepare for Light Rail.
The Hurdman-to-Lees section wasn’t expected to close until April, but rusty beams on the Transitway bridge over the Rideau River are forcing the city to shut it down early so Rideau Transit Group, the contractor building the $2.1-billion Confederation line, can complete the unanticipated repairs.
There were no issues to report on Monday morning, as passenger volumes were unusually light due to the Christmas holiday season. Bus shelters were practically empty, and buses came and left the stations without delay.
