A winter storm watch and driving advisory has been issued for most of Southern Ontario, with Ottawa’s first major snowfall expected to sweep across region within the next 24 hours.

Environment Canada says a storm from Texas will spread heavy, blowing snow into the region Monday night and into Tuesday.

The government website issued a statement saying road travel should be avoided if possible.

“Travel conditions will deteriorate Monday night as visibilities drop to near zero and roads become snow covered. The snow and blowing snow will continue Tuesday. Snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm can be expected before the snow begins to taper off Tuesday night.”

Monday will be mainly sunny with increasing cloudiness in the afternoon, with a high of -8 C and low of -14.
