Environment Canada’s winter storm warning was still in effect Tuesday. The weather agency says to expect snow and ice pellets Tuesday morning, with wind gusting at 30 to 50 km/h.
Another 10 to 20 centimetres of snow is on its way.
With many in the capital off this week on holidays, traffic was light during the morning commute, lessening the storm’s impact. Only a handful of minor collisions had been reported to police.
The Ottawa International Airport is warning travellers to check flights in advance, as the wintry conditions could cause delays here and in Toronto.
The city is warning drivers not to park on the street this evening. An overnight parking ban is in effect from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. to allow plows to clear roads.
Ottawa police tweeted that OC Transpo buses and other vehicles were stuck on Hunt Club Road near Lorry Greenberg.
For weeks the City of Ottawa has been eagerly promoting its new “Where’s My Plow” website and application.
The new service, however, appears to have failed its first test. On Tuesday, with the first onset of real winter in the capital, both the website and app offer a message better suited to summer: “There are no plowing operations planned at this time.”
The city has been actively promoting and marketing the service, including radio advertisements.
But as snow continues to fall Tuesday, Ottawa residents hoping to find out when their street will be cleared will have to resort to the city’s “311” information line.
Officials from the City of Ottawa were not available to comment on why the service is down.
Winter’s first true icy blast brought accumulations of snow and a blast of cold air that made for icy roads and dropped the temperature at 8 a.m. to -12 C, which felt more like -24 with the wind chill.
— More to come.
