A man was arrested in Cobourg after allegedly uttering threats on a VIA Rail headed to Toronto on Tuesday.
James Martin Platts, 57, from Chatham-Kent, is charged with uttering death threats.
Cobourg Police were notified by VIA officials that numerous people became concerned after they allegedly heard the individual making threats on his cell phone regarding Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and female MPs.
A spokesman for the prime minister said in an emailed statement that Prime Minister’s Office has “complete faith in the police authorities and the RCMP Protective Policing Service when it comes to the security of the Prime Minister and his family. We have no further comment to make.”
The train arrived in Cobourg just before 12 p.m. and the man was arrested and questioned inside the terminal.
Passengers from the car where the man was seated were evacuated as a precaution while the area of the train was searched.
A short time later police escorted the man to a police car in handcuffs where he was taken to the Cobourg Police Station.
The passengers were allowed to re-board the train approximately 45 minutes later.
Police searched the man’s belongings inside the passenger terminal for anything suspicious.
Cobourg Police Sgt. Paul Legere commented at the scene stating there were “no credible threats to persons on the train and no allegations of threats to the train or parties on the train.”
One witness was also taken to Cobourg Police for a statement.
Another passenger told Northumberland Today she heard the man make threats to national security, but that was unconfirmed and police wouldn’t comment on the matter.
