Ottawa police are warning snowmobilers to use extra caution this weekend because of warmer than usual weather.

“We don’t have our typical January winter conditions,” Const. Alanna Fong of the marine, dive and trail unit said in a statement. “As a result, you need to be more cautious. It’s not safe to be on the ice for any purpose and we are asking residents to stay off.”

The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority said that above-freezing temperatures and rain forecast for this weekend are expected to reduce the snow cover and cause increased water levels and flows in the Rideau watershed.

The authority also said that water levels on lakes are close to normal for the time of year, but will increase during the thaw. Ice that had just begun to form on streams and rivers will become even less stable.

Police said two snowmobilers went through ice on Jan. 6 in a marshy area near Kettles Road west of Richmond.

In another incident earlier this month, a 35-year-old man was airlifted to hospital from Dunrobin after his snowmobile hit a patch of dirt.

Ottawa paramedics advised residents heading out to tell someone their itinerary and carry a basic survival kit and a GPS-enabled cellphone.
