An extra professional development day has been added for teachers in Ottawa’s English public and Catholic schools, as the boards implement new teacher contracts.

Classes are cancelled on PD days, leaving parents of elementary kids scrambling to find care. One of the gains won by both elementary and secondary teachers in recent contract talks was the extra PD Day.

In the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, the extra PD day will be April 15 for elementary students and Feb. 1 for secondary students. That pushes the total number of PD days in the school year to seven. Elementary teachers will spend the extra day on math education and health and safety issues, while secondary teachers will “focus on Ministry priorities, including mathematics education and/or equity,” says a statement from the board.

The Ottawa Catholic School Board is expected to approve a PD Day of April 15 for all schools. The issue comes to the board Tuesday. That would bring the total to seven PD days at that board as well.

Parents whose children attend before-and-after school programs at elementary schools at the public board can send their kids to a day-long camp on the extra PD Day. The same service will be provided at the Catholic board, depending on demand at each school.
