The past weekend’s rain and balmy temperatures did the Rideau Canal Skateway no favours. After assessing the ice conditions Monday, the National Capital Commission determined they still aren’t safe enough for work crews to begin operations on the canal. The NCC will re-evaluate Tuesday. The current weather forecast is more promising, calling for below-zero temperatures through the weekend. About 10 days – or more – of overnight lows of minus-15 or lower are needed to build the 30 centimetres of ice required to support the weight of canal skaters.
