It’s safe to say that former prime minister Joe Clark won’t be asking for an exchange or return on the remarkably unique, creative and lasting gift his family commissioned to commemorate his 75th birthday: an original work of performing art by Canadian composer John Estacio.

The new piece of music is based on I Lost My Talk, a poem by the late Mi’kmaq artist Rita Joe about her residential school experience. It made its world premiere Thursday at the National Arts Centre, where it was performed by the NAC Orchestra under the baton of musical director Alexander Shelley. He later described the poem as simple, elegant and dignified and spoke fondly at the opening night party of Joe’s family, who attended that night.

At the reception, Clark was presented with a special hand-held drum. He gave it a few loud taps while joking: “It’s too bad I’m no longer in the House of Commons.”

The multimedia work, commissioned by Clark’s wife, Maureen McTeer, and his daughter, Catherine Clark, is “wonderful,” Clark told Around Town at the reception.

“It was a powerful, powerful presentation” the elder statesman said, referring to the combination of the orchestral music with imagery, words and dance. The performance earned a standing ovation in Southam Hall. “I was really struck by the fact that it was so Canadian. It was a story of ours; it wasn’t an adaptation of anything else.”

The residential school system is now a dark chapter in Canadian history. “But, this was a hopeful story, and I think that reflects the age right now,” said Clark.

Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, wife of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, attended. So did Gov. Gen. David Johnston and his wife, Sharon Johnston. Also seen was the Assembly of First Nations’ national chief, Perry Bellegarde, as well as award-winning Canadian novelist Joseph Boyden.

Boyden and Estacio were part of a panel discussion on art in the context of reconciliation. It was held at the NAC before the concert and moderated by Marie Wilson, a commissioner with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

So packed was the room that it was standing-room only, with an overflow crowd.

Also at the premiere were such Supreme Court judges as Rosalie Silberman Abella and Michael Moldaver. As well, members of the I Lost My Talk creative team attended, including creative producer and director Donna Feore, seen with her stage and screen acting hubby, Colm Feore.

“I’m delighted, not just that the production was so brilliant but also that the response was so positive,” McTeer told Around Town. “It was a happening, as we used to say when I was young.”
