The closure of a portion of the Transitway west of downtown Ottawa failed to add much inconvenience to a cold and windy Monday morning, with OC Transpo riders reporting only slight delays, at worst, in their commute.
“They did their jobs right,” said Sandra Baranek as she waited on Albert Street near Bayview Road for a connecting bus. She noted that OC Transpo had workers in the area helping anyone experiencing difficulties figuring out where to go. “They made it simple.”
Additionally, Kitchissippi councillor Jeff Leiper hired a person to greet pedestrians at Albert and Bayview and let them know of a foot and bicycle path just on the north side of the Transitway, a safer and less windy route to the Albert-Bayview station than the Albert Street bridge over the O-Train tracks.
All in all, Leiper, who was out in the thick of traffic taking notes, said he was happy with how things went on Monday, the first day that the portion of the Transitway between Merton Street and Empress Avenue was closed to allow the conversion of the bus-only route into a light-rail line.
“There are a couple of tweaks that need to be made — the message is going out to drivers right now not to let people off for the O-Train at Bayview, and a couple of busloads of people have gotten out and didn’t know where to go — but we’re not seeing any stacking up of buses, and the cars are not particularly stacked up, either.”
Leiper admitted, though, that the extra bus traffic along Scott and Alberts streets will be a major headache for residents there.
“It’s loud, and that, along with the air quality, is something that we’re going to have to monitor.”
Overall, riders seemed to take the disruption in stride. Some commented that their commutes were delayed by two or three minutes; others said there was no change.
“We can’t do much about all the construction,” said James Vannier, a civil servant on his way to work downtown. “It might be a little inconvenient for some people, but it’s all part of getting to something better.”
