The Glebe Community Centre was the hub of the town Thursday as everyone from experienced epicures to nibbling neophytes crammed together under one large roof for the 18th annual Taste in the Glebe food, wine and beer party.
Connoisseurs of cocktails were also accommodated as Steve Morrier, owner of Split Tree Cocktail and former successful Dragons’ Den contestant, poured his Light and Breezy drink concoction of North of 7 dark rum with all-natural ginger syrup and sour mix.
In the packed crowd of 400 were many long-time supporters. There was the original brains behind the fundraiser, Mayor Jim Watson, along with such community fixtures as restaurateur Caren von Merveldt (Von’s and Flipper’s), Metro grocer Jim McKeen and the always-popular Jim Foster (Pelican Fishery and Grill). Rosie’s Southern Kitchen and Raw Bar, The Pomeroy House and The Rowan were also among the eateries to participate in the event, which involved dozens of local shops and stores.

Fresh additions included chef and owner Joe Thottungla from Coconut Lagoon on St. Laurent Boulevard and such new Lansdowne joints as Local and the family-owned SEN.

Lansdowne businesses are gladly received at Taste in the Glebe, said Tahera Mufti, who’s been heading the organizing committee for the past seven years. “The Glebe is hopping. Lansdowne has created more activity. There are establishments or restaurants from Lansdowne that promote community events like this one, and we welcome that.”
The $55-a-ticket evening brings the Glebe community together in the deep, dark, dead of winter for a relaxing night of socializing over drinks and fabulous food. “Listen to the energy,” said Carol Devenny, speaking above the loud buzz of conversation. She and her husband, Grant McDonald, were attending for their first time. Added McDonald: “It’s also a nice way to get fed on a Thursday night.”

Carol Devenny and Grant McDonald, who recently moved to the Glebe from Rockcliffe Park, were first-time attendees of the Taste in the Glebe food- and drink-sampling fundraiser, held at the Glebe Community Centre on Thursday, January 21, 2016.
The power couple (she’s the Ottawa managing partner at PwC and he’s the regional managing partner for KPMG) recently bid good bye to Rockcliffe Park for luxury condo living in the Glebe. George Weber, CEO of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group, and Colleen Mooney, head of the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, were also among the Glebites out supporting the cause.

The evening raised $20,000 for the GNAG (Glebe Neighbourhood Activities Group) community development fund to: support community projects, provide financial assistance to families that can’t cover program costs, and help with building maintenance costs.
