A Smiths Falls man learned the hard way that if you’re going try to pull off a hit-and-run, you’d better not be running on empty.
Police say the man was leaving a residence on Elmsley Street North on Saturday when he struck a truck on the street. After a brief interaction between the drivers the first man took off, followed by the other driver who called 911 and trailed behind at a safe speed and distance.
The suspect didn’t get far. He ran out of gas a short distance outside town, where Smiths Falls police arrested him. The 48-year-old man was charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident and was released on a promise to appear in court.
