The capital region’s jobless rate climbed to 6.3 per cent in January, compared with 6.2 per cent in December, Statistics Canada reported Friday.

The number of jobs in the region fell by 3,800, while the labour force declined by 2,800.

The biggest decline was seen in the construction sector, down to 44,200 jobs compared with 47,300 in December, but still well up from 38,500 in January a year ago.

It also appears the public administration sector has stabilized in capital region with 145,500 jobs in January, compared with 145,900 in December and 145,600 in January, 2015.

Drilling a little deeper into the public admin statistics, there were 131,200 federal government jobs in the capital in January compared with 131,400 in December and 129,500 in January, 2015.

Meanwhile, there was still some weakness in high-tech in the capital. StatsCan lists 40,600 employed in the sector in January, compared with 41,000 in December. A year ago, there were 45,100.

Meanwhile, Statistics Canada reported that the national unemployment rate edged up to 7.2 per cent in January from 7.1 per cent.

The agency said the economy lost 5,700 jobs, with the biggest losses recorded in Alberta. For the second month in a row, Ontario was the only province with job growth, up 20,000.
