It might work on TV, but police caution would-be criminal masterminds that the old “send the underage friend to take the rap” trick seldom works in real life.
Detectives quickly determined that a youth who “surrendered” Friday for the Jan. 26 lunch-hour pepper-spray attack on a woman on a No. 96 OC Transpo bus wasn’t the real bad guy.
In the attack, a woman was sprayed in the face following an argument with a man. The spray also hit other passengers.
Ottawa police Sgt. Steven Desjourdy said the young man who surrendered was interviewed by detectives and after discussion, the youth admitted that he didn’t wield the noxious spray.
“The story wasn’t matching,” Desjourdy said.
Police are now seeking a warrant for Devin Huff, 18, who resides in the Ottawa/Gatineau area, although his current whereabouts are unknown.
He is charged with assault with a weapon, six counts of administrating a “noxious thing with intent,” and failure to comply with a young offender sentence.
He’s also charged with obstruction of justice and counselling “an indictable offence which is not committed.”
As for the young man who surrendered, he was put on warning and is expected to testify as a witness for the Crown.
