Instead of going to work Tuesday, a self-proclaimed “avid outdoorsman” called in sick from his Hydro Ottawa job — consequences be damned — to hike the downtown area in snowshoes.

With a serious winter storm pounding the capital, David Kroft, 28, decided he would accomplish a goal he’s had since he moved to Ottawa in September.

“After I saw the forecast this morning, I strapped my snowshoes on in my driveway and began my journey,” he said.

His tour of the city started at the National Arts Centre and took him across the canal, through the ByWard Market and up to Parliament Hill itself.

“There’s nothing more Canadian than snowshoeing on Parliament Hill,” Kroft said. “I moved up here in September and I’ve been wanting to do this ever since.”

While Kroft called in sick from his job as a power line technician, it was quite clear he was in no way sick. So much so, in fact, that he contacted the Citizen asking them to publish a photo of him snowshoeing.

It was “a totally awesome experience! If you could put my picture in the newspaper that would be incredible and much appreciated,” he wrote in an email to the Citizen.

And even if he gets caught by his employers, Kroft isn’t too worried. The experience “was totally worth it,” he said in an interview.
