Environment Canada continues to warn of a major winter storm Wednesday and Thursday. But details remain hazy as the storm from Texas hasn’t made its northbound travel plans clear.

“Travelling conditions are expected to quickly deteriorate Wednesday as the precipitation arrives,” the weather office warns.

But it said Tuesday morning that the location of the heaviest rain and snow and the areas at risk of freezing rain will depend on the exact path the storm takes, “which is still uncertain at this time.”

The storm “is expected to develop and emerge from Texas today (Tuesday), then track northeast towards the Lower Great Lakes and intensify into a moisture laden winter storm Wednesday.

“This winter storm is expected to bring significant amounts of rain, snow and ice pellets, along with the possibility of freezing rain.”

Weather forecasts for northern New York State are calling for mainly rain, with a dusting of snow. But Eastern Ontario may be just cool enough to get more snow than rain.

The storm is carrying a load of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

“These types of winter storms from Texas typically bring 15 to 30 mm or more of rain to some areas, and 15 to 30 cm of heavy snow farther north,” Environment Canada says. “A band of freezing rain and ice pellets often forms over regions near the rain-snow line.”
