A zoo owner shot and killed a male lion that had escaped from its enclosure at a small private zoo near Wendover Sunday afternoon.
Officers from Hawkesbury OPP rushed to the scene and found the African lion walking near the entrance of Papanack Park Zoo, an unfenced area. There was no way to contain the animal, police say, and the zoo owner was forced to shoot it at 5:30 p.m., a little more than an hour after police were called.
They gave no information about how the lion got loose, and didn’t identify the zoo owner.
The zoo has been in the news twice in recent years. Keith Forgie, the owner in 2012, raised a baby zebra inside his house near the zoo after it was born prematurely.
And later that year, a former animal keeper publicly accused the zoo of keeping animals in substandard conditions, a charge Forgie denied.
The zoo is just outside Wendover, east of Rockland.
