You don’t need to have claws coming out of your hands to be a superhero.

This is what Moses Otim and Osman Naqvi wanted to communicate at the Superhero Week launch on Saturday afternoon at Regina Street Public School.

Otim, who studies law at McGill, and Naqvi, a criminology student at Carleton, run an after-school program they call “Superhero School,” encouraging at-risk youth to tackle issues in their community.

“We realize we have our very own superheroes here in our community,” Otim said, “and maybe they’re not getting the same silver screen that all these other guys are getting.”

The launch was an opportunity to showcase the initiatives some students are working on.

Nadeea Rahim is one of those superheroes. The Grade 11 Woodroffe High School student aims to get more youth involved with opportunities outside of school.

“From my own personal experience, if I didn’t have Pathways to Education I wouldn’t have known anything about this program or all the volunteer opportunities that I am doing at the moment.”

Rahim said she noticed a lot of her friends aren’t aware of the volunteering options available to them.

“I know for me, I have to force a conversation with adults to actually understand what’s going on in this city or for me to develop new skills.”

Rahim came to the Superhero Week launch to present her idea to the community.

The five-month Superhero School program is new this year and part of an initiative called YOUth Heroes, which Otim and Naqvi started in 2014.

The organization received a proclamation from the City of Ottawa during the event.
