Gatineau has removed the last tents from a village of homeless people after a man stabbed a 16-year-old girl near the camp Tuesday afternoon.

The girl is in hospital but out of danger.

The camp is on the edge of Hull’s Brewery Creek, near the Robert Guertin Area and also the École secondaire de l’Île, which the girl attends.

Homeless people set up a tent village in 2014, populated by residents overflowing from Le Gîte Ami, a shelter next door. The shelter only accepts people for two weeks.

At first, Gatineau let the campers stay. But it evicted them last fall, intending to address the issue again in the spring. Some came back through the winter but the city evicted them again Tuesday and Wednesday, following the stabbing. It plans to make a more permanent decision in the next few weeks.

Gatineau police said the girl was stabbed at around 3:30 p.m. on a path near the tent city.

A young woman walks along a footpath located across a creek from a homeless camp consisting of two tarp covered dwellings at the back of the Robert Guertin Arena.

A man in his 50s is in custody, captured by an unidentified man in a “citizen’s arrest.” It’s not know whether he was a camp resident.

The alleged attacker was also taken to hospital. Police would not say how he was injured.

On Wednesday morning, police were mounting increased security near the high school. Counsellors were also expected to help students.

Tuesday’s stabbing follows 50 to 60 confrontations between campers and students in the past year, says Johanne Légaré, chair of the Commission scolaire des Portages-de-l’Outaouais. She has called for the city to make sure the camp doesn’t come back.

More to come.
