On a day when terrorists went on a murderous rampage in Brussels, the Canadian government announced it’s creating a new office to help it respond to the threat posed by violent radicalization in this country.

The new body, called the Office of the Community Outreach and Counter-radicalization Co-ordinator, will provide leadership on Canada’s response to radicalization to violence, according to Tuesday’s federal budget.

It will also support community outreach and research and co-ordinate joint federal-provincial and international initiatives to counter radicalization.

Starting with initial funding of $3 million in 2016-17, the federal budget will provide $35 million over five years to the new office, with on-going funding of $10 million a year.

The creation of the new office is one of several “immediate measures” announced in the budget designed to keep Canadians safe.

Others include restoring funding to heavy urban search and rescue task forces in Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary and Manitoba, strengthening the security of government networks and cyber systems and reopening a search-and-rescue station in Vancouver.
