Doctors save lives, cure diseases and advance medical knowledge, but what was most impressive Saturday was the willingness of nine physicians from The Ottawa Hospital’s Department of Medicine to step into the spotlight and dance under the scrutiny of a panel of judges, while a sold-out crowd of 700 watched on.
From sultry to soulful, from simply fun to downright hilarious, each physician shined in his and her own way, with or without their glittery costumes.
The dance contest was the focus of the second annual Dancing with the Docs gala dinner, held in the ballroom of the Hilton Lac Leamy to raise funds for two compelling causes: the Patient Urgent Needs Fund and creating a Chair in Advanced Stem Cell Therapy. Organizers were hoping to net $50,000.
“I’m not one for clichés but I have to say that, tonight, there are no losers,” Dr. Phil Wells, head of the Department of Medicine, said on stage after the contest. “Everybody is a winner.”
The participating physicians, he added, are a reflection of what the Department of Medicine is all about. “These people are talented, they’re dedicated, they’re hard-working, they’re caring and, most of all, they like to have fun.”
(They sure do; panties and briefs were thrown on stage during the show).

The 2016 Dancing with the Docs gala presented by the Department of Medicine and held at the Hilton Lac-Leamy on Saturday, April 2, 2016, in support of two causes: the Patient Urgent Needs Fund and the creation of a Chair in Advanced Stem Cell Therapy.
It was the very personal performance by the foxtrotting Erin Keely, an endocrinologist, that won her and her Arthur Murray Studio pro dance partner Vadim Safonov, the Medicine Ball Award, as well as most online votes.
Also ready to rumba that night with their Arthur Murray partners were: Dr. Avi Chatterjee, a gastroenterologist; Dr. Nancy Dudek, a physiatrist; Dr. Tiago Mestre, a neurologist; Dr. Mitchell Sabloff, a hematologist; Dr. Yoko S. Schreiber, an infectious disease specialist; Dr. Ed Spilg, a geriatrician; Dr. Amanda Young, an internal medicine resident; and Dr. Jocelyn Zwicker, a neurologist.
‘Stuntman’ Stu Schwartz, who’s battling leukemia and in need of a bone marrow transplant, was unable to MC but his appearance, via video, left the crowd cheering.
The evening was co-chaired by Dr. Anne McCarthy, Tracy Serafini and Dr. Elianna Saidenberg, a hematopathologist who has just finished a year of cancer treatment. She has spearheaded the Patient Urgent Needs Funds to help break down the costly barriers preventing some patients from accessing health care at The Ottawa Hospital.
“I just wanted to do something to give back to The Ottawa Hospital and I wanted to do something that would directly impact impact patients,” Saidenberg told Around Town. “I mean, I have patients who go home and eat cat food because they can’t afford anything or who don’t come to their appointments simply because they can’t afford the parking.
“Being sick is very expensive.”
