The beginning of Wednesday’s rush hour was pretty smooth as snow began to blanket the city.
Ottawa police said they responded to 17 crashes since 1 p.m., which isn’t far off the number of collisions they get on a nice day.
But you still might need those winter tires, Environment Canada said in a special alert for the capital.
A special weather statement is in effect for Wednesday, saying to expect five to 10 cm of snow from mid-day Wednesday into the evening. About two centimetres should fall by midnight, with more snow overnight, possibly changing to rain. The high was predicted to be 3 C on Thursday morning.
Snowfall warnings are also in effect for regions just north of Ottawa, where amounts of 15 cm or more are expected.
Thursday will see periods of rain with a high of 7 C.
The area from Toronto west has had significant snow since the weekend.
