Ottawa is on its way to beating its 1958 record for the amount of snow to blanket the city during an April 6 snowstorm.

Environment Canada said it expected at least 15 centimetres to fall by Thursday morning, which would beat the current record of 13 centimetres. By Thursday morning, the temperature had warmed up to above freezing and roads were wet and messy. Rain, then light showers are forecast for today for a high of 6.

A blanket of snow hit Ottawa midday Wednesday, making the commute difficult on foot and on the roads.

Rob Kuhn, a severe-weather meteorologist with the agency, said a special weather statement issued Wednesday afternoon was upgraded to a snowfall warning early in the evening as the snow began accumulating rapidly, slowing the afternoon commute to a crawl.

Snowfall warnings are also in effect for regions just north of Ottawa, where 15 cm or more of snow were expected.

“It does happen,” Kuhn said of the spring snowstorm. “It’s one season fighting with the other.”

That said, signs of spring were expected to return on Thursday morning with the snow turning to rain by the morning commute and the temperature rising to a high of 7 C.

Ottawa police responded to 78 crashes between 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, prompting them to tweet out a warning to drivers to slow down and remove all snow from their car before driving. MRC des Collines in West Quebec reported 27 accidents.

And good news for skiers …
