A Gatineau resident suffered several injuries when a stranger broke into his house in a quiet residential neighbourhood and attacked him overnight, said police.

A man of undetermined age dressed all in black and about 6-feet tall broke the window to a door and let himself into the house at 64 Des Pommiers St. just after midnight, Gatineau police said.

There, he was confronted by the resident, a 55-year-old man. An ensuing scuffle left the resident with wounds to his legs made with an axe the assailant was carrying, said police.

The resident was taken to hospital where his wounds were assessed as not life-threatening. He had been released from hospital by ;ate Saturday morning. Police could not say if others were at home at the time of the attack, but no other injuries were reported.

Police searched the area for the assailant, even using dogs, but were unable to locate a suspect overnight. Investigators remained on the scene Saturday morning.
