MPP Jack MacLaren is going to be taking time off from the Ontario legislature indefinitely after sexist comments he made towards MP Karen McCrimmon in Carp last month.
Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown put the MPP for Carleton-Mississippi Mills on leave and ordered him to undergo sensitivity training following two weeks of controversy that included misogynistic jokes about McCrimmon and the discovery of fake testimonials on MacLaren’s website. MacLaren will still be doing constituency work.
Postmedia went out to ask people in MacLaren’s riding for their thoughts following the MPP’s departure from Queen’s Park. They had mixed reactions.

Heather Cardmore.
Name: Heather Cardmore
Occupation: Mother of three/engineer and patent examiner with the federal government
Comment: “It should be taken very seriously. He needs to be suspended. On the provincial level, as a mother of three, it’s important when my daughter asks me about issues like this to show them something in the news … that sexism is not allowed at any government level.”

Ian Dorward.
Name: Ian Dorward
Occupation: Retail worker
Comment: “It seems like a token punishment if he’s still working and he’s still getting paid. It seems more like a show, smoke and mirrors. If he’s still doing his job and still getting paid, was there really any punishment?”

Spencer Gallichan-Lowe.
Name: Spencer Gallichan-Lowe
Occupation: Grad student
Comment: “Public officials in today’s day and age shouldn’t be talking that way about women and people in general. It’s just such an antiquated, sexist way of behaving. What was he doing talking and telling jokes like that in public? It’s ridiculous, he should know better, he’s an adult.”

Kurt Hamnes.
Name: Kurt Hamnes
Occupation: Retired
Comment: “I don’t think it was worthy of punishment. A one-time situation, I don’t agree with him being punished at all. If he served his constituents well, and they want to reprimand him, fine, go ahead. But it’s too much.”

Gina Montgomery.
Name: Gina Montgomery
Occupation: Stay-at-home-mom
Comment: “I never liked Jack MacLaren actually and I’m glad he was punished for the things he said at that event in Carp. I was actually quite appalled to read that he decided to say those things. I think we need to be held accountable for the things we say.”
