Six people, including a police officer, were confined in a Hull office tower Wednesday evening after touching a suspicious envelope delivered to a Department of National Defence worker.
Investigators also sealed off the block outside 105 Hotel de Ville St. between Kent Street and Promenade du Portage while they awaited specialized equipment, including a portable X-ray machine, to find out if the item contained dangerous material.
The package raised alarm bells because an unknown person tried to hand-deliver it to an employee, who then discovered that inside was another envelope the employee did not open.
Gatineau police were investigating with the help of the Ottawa fire department’s hazardous material team after being called in by military police.
