Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson presented the Key to the City to philanthropist, television personality and University of Ottawa alumnus Alex Trebek today at a brief ceremony at City Hall.
Although Mr. Trebek is probably best known as the host of long-running television game show Jeopardy!, he is also known for his philanthropy, activism, commitment to higher education and loyalty to his alma mater.
“Alex Trebek does exceptional work in the community, is a cultural icon and someone all Ottawa residents are proud to consider one of their own,” said Mayor Watson. “He has always made a point of giving back, particularly to the University of Ottawa where he has made frequent contributions.”
Mr. Trebek attended the University of Ottawa where he graduated in 1961 with a degree in Philosophy. Today he has a building named after him (Alex Trebek Alumni Hall) at the University of Ottawa and sponsors a lecture series at the university.
He is an active supporter of World Vision and has travelled to many developing countries with World Vision projects. He hosts the annual National Geographic Bee in the United States and The Great Canadian Geography Challenge in Canada.
An ornamental key – the Key to the City – is presented to esteemed residents, visitors and others whom the City of Ottawa wishes to honour. This practice has a symbolic meaning evoking medieval walled cities, the gates of which would be guarded during the day and locked at night. The key symbolizes the freedom of the recipient to enter and leave the city at will as a trusted friend of city residents.
Since 1935, 86 individuals and organizations have received the Key to the City of Ottawa. Past individual recipients include Her Royal Highness The Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II), Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, author Margaret Atwood, photographers Yousuf and Malak Karsh, His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan, actress Sandra Oh and former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson.
