Ottawa police is warning the public that fraudsters are taking pressure tactics to a new level by leaving voice messages warning victims their family members could be arrested if the phone call isn’t returned.

The organized fraud unit say fraudsters — who have been known to impersonate government agencies and attorneys — request the victim’s personal information and banking information, including credit cards, bank accounts and passwords to “confirm a victim’s identity” and avoid an arrest.

Ottawa police remind residents to be very wary when receiving phone calls in which personal information and/or banking information is requested.

For further information on marketing scams and fraud, visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre for more information.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ottawa Police Service call centre at 613-236-1222, ext. 7300 or CrimeStoppers toll-free at 1-800-222-8477.
