A month ago, Fireda Ahmed, a social work placement student, spearheaded an initiative by Ridgemont High School students to build a library for the youth of Attawapiskat. Through social media, they have received more than 200 books bought by anonymous donors. On Wednesday, the Ridgemont students gathered at the library to write notes of encouragement and support for the youth of Attawapiskat. These messages were inserted in the brand new books, selected from an Amazon wish list created by the First Nation’s youth. Many ESL students were moved by the story of the Attawapiskat and were eager to write to them, even though they can’t yet write in English.
