The earth shook — ever so slightly — in the Pembroke-Petawawa region on Saturday evening, but no damage was reported.

A quake of magnitude 3.3 struck 12 kilometres southwest of Petawawa at about 5:30 p.m., but was only lightly felt in Petawawa and Pembroke, according to the Earthquakes Canada website.

Terry MacDonald, superintendent of the Indian River Golf Course in Pembroke, said he didn’t feel a thing, and thought the wet weather Saturday may have had a lot to do with it.

“There was so much rain, the ground was probably too soggy for anyone to feel anything,” MacDonald said Saturday night.

According to Earthquakes Canada, any quake under 3.5 is generally not felt, with anything under 6.0 causing slight damage to well-designed buildings but major damage to poorly constructed structures over small regions. Any earthquake above 7.0 is considered a “major” event.
