An 85-year-old woman has been sent to hospital with second and third-degree burns after a fire broke out in a seventh-floor apartment at 266 Bronson Ave., at the intersection of Cooper Street, on Sunday morning.

Ottawa Fire rushed to the scene after a 911 caller reported that unit 701 was on fire. Firefighters saw smoke from the seventh floor on arrival, and a working fire was declared at 8:21 a.m.

The victim was transported to hospital by ambulance, and a fire investigator is at the scene.

Ottawa paramedics say the woman was unconscious and in critical condition with second- and third-degree burns to half of her body. A number of advanced treatments were performed en route to the Ottawa Hospital Burn Unit.

Paramedics had to establish an airway for the patient and provided pain control while treating the burns.

More to come.
