Yes, that blazing light in the eastern sky at about 12:30 a.m. was a meteor.

“Tens of thousands” of people witnessed the very bright fireball, mostly in the northeastern United States and a few in Canada, said Peter Brown, a meteor expert at Western University. His camera network detected it low on the horizon south of Kingston.

The space rock may have been the size of a basketball, or even a small shopping cart, he said.

“It was a very bright meteor (and) almost certainly dropped meteorites last night,” he said. “Very spectacular.”

It’s called a meteor as it flies through the atmosphere and heats up. Meteorites are pieces on the ground later.

The meteor was generally flying south to north, and may have landed near the Canada-U.S. border some 100 kilometres southeast of Sherbrooke.

Finding pieces may be difficult. A searcher would have to identify a small rock in rugged country.

“It was a pretty good size, pretty energetic,” Brown said. “There are all kinds of videos, people with security cameras.”
