Calls reporting a suspected grass fire in Ottawa’s rural south end turned out to be a home and car fire that left a family homeless.
According to fire officials, the blaze on Empire Grove St. at around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday sent smoke billowing into the air, prompting several people to call 911 to report a grass fire in the area. When firefighters arrived, they found a home engulfed in flames. All residents of the home are reported to have made it out safely.
It took fire fighters until around 1 p.m. to bring the blaze under control.
The cause of the fire and estimated damages have not yet been released. An investigation into the blaze is ongoing.
