Ottawa police have laid 123 charges against 31 people after a month-long drug trafficking investigation targeting dealers in neighbourhoods in and around the downtown core.

The investigation, dubbed Project Shedder, was launched in May by the Ottawa police street crime unit to identity and arrest people involved in low-level drug trafficking in response to complaints from the community.

Police discovered 31 drug traffickers were working in the ByWard Market, Lowertown, Sandy Hill and along Rideau Street.

On Wednesday, police began to make arrests in the investigation and took 19 people into custody. Arrest warrants will be obtained for another 12 drug traffickers, police said.

Police said they seized cocaine, crack cocaine, Fentanyl, heroin, marijuana, crystal meth and speed with a street value of $31,400.

The 31 people charged face a total of 40 counts of drug trafficking, 14 counts of drug possession for the purpose of trafficking, 42 counts of possession of proceeds obtained by crime and 27 counts of breaching release conditions.
